Obituary

Vernon Lowell Strand

Born March 7, 1933 in Dodge County, Minnesota. Died May 31, 2019 at home, surrounded by loved ones.

Vern grew up on a farm in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota. After graduating from Blooming Prairie High School, he served two years in the army including a year in the Marshall Islands (1954-1955). Once back in Minnesota, Vern attended Winona State University where he received his bachelor’s degree in 1959. He eventually went on to get his master’s degree from Saint Cloud State University in 1965. He was employed as a teacher for one year in Chatfield, Minnesota, then worked 31 years teaching at Mound Westonka where he was beloved by students and faculty alike. Vern also taught traffic safety classes well into his retirement. He was a devoted member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where he served as a church council president. He was also a past commander of the Mound American Legion. Vern had a zest for life. He enjoyed traveling throughout the US with his wife, Dee, collecting toy cars, and true to his farming roots, Vern would often drive his John Deere tractor around the yard. Vern was an adoring and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Clara Strand, his siblings, Calmer (Donna) Strand, and Arlene (John) Doering. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Delores (Dee), daughters, Julie (Rick) Olsen, Jennifer (Mike) Doyle, his four grandchildren, Gabrielle and Liam Doyle, and Jillian and Steven Olsen, siblings-in-law, Jean Schimmele, Roger Erickson, Carol (Jack) Benson and many nieces and nephews. Memorial service 11 AM Friday (6/7) at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 2451 Fairview Lane, Mound, with visitation starting at 10 AM. Family interment, Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. John’s Lutheran Church or District 277 Foundation.
