Cafarella, Vernon William Age 97 of Excelsior passed away peacefully and surrounded by his family on Sunday, December 23, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tonnie and Marie, brothers Bob and Lorrie, and son James Vernon. Survived by his loving and devoted wife of 64 years, Joan, sons Johnny, Paul (Susie) Joe, (Emma) Tom (Heidi). Also survived by grandchildren Julie (John), Jenny, Danny, Abbie, Jason, Jack, and Alex. Vern served as a WWII Navy pilot and subsequently graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1949. He then began a career in Marketing Research and was employed by General Mills from 1959 until 1984, where he retired as Market Research Director. After retiring, Vern continued to work as a consultant for Darden Restaurants for an additional 25 years, where he was instrumental in making both Olive Garden and Red Lobster the internationally successful restaurants they are today. Most importantly, Vern will always be remembered for his love and affection for his wife and family and his ever present happy disposition. Vern's love and enthusiasm for life was evident in his pursuit of many interests, ranging from the spiritual and philosophical to his passion for music, tennis, and golf. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him. I am so sad to hear about your loss. We are privileged to have Tom, Vern and Joan’s son, as our son-in-law and know how much he loved and respected his dad. Vern will be missed, but leaves so many endearing memories.
