Obituary for McDonald "Don" Winton

Winton, McDonald passed away at his home in Excelsior, MN on December 26, 2017. He was surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 8, 1932 to Charles J. Winton, Jr. and Henrietta McDonald Winton. He grew up in Deephaven, MN, graduated from Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Massachusetts and Macalester College in St. Paul, MN. He served his country in the Army and went on to build single family homes and develop apartment complexes in St. Paul, MN and St. Petersburg, FL. Besides his family, his other great love was collecting classic cars as well as quite a fleet of new cars. He could identify the age and make of any car by the grill, hubcaps and the slope of the fins. He could also tell you the options available on any classic car. Don was grateful to be in recovery for 28 years. He is survived by his wife, Betty, his sister Judy Winton Dayton, and his children with Jane Amesbury Winton: Scott (Alexandra) Winton, Leslie (Jack) Butman, Kate Poley, and John (Elizabeth) Winton. He is also survived by his step-children: Mark Kaelke, Kim (David) Ellingson and Kate (Merritt) Schoff. He has 10 grandchildren: Parker and Taylor Butman; Winton, McDonald and Decker Poley; Jacob and Madelaine Ellingson; Sophia and Emma Kaelke and Charlie Schoff. He is also survived by step-grandchildren Jacob and Jacqueline Pfaff; Demi and Nikki George and Peter and Henry Schoff. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Charles J.Winton III, sister Helen Winton Whitney and wife Margaret Beim Winton. Special thanks to Don's companion, Christine Benson, she was the best caregiver and friend ever. Thank you also to Ridgeview Hospice. Services will be held on Thursday, January 11 at the Lafayette Club, Minnetonka Beach, MN. The family will greet guests at 3:00pm and services will be held at 4:00pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the following: Ridgeview Foundation, Waconia, MN, Hennepin County Humane Society or Twin Cities PBS.
