Robert "Bob" Ross
Robert Kenneth Ross (Bob), 81, died unexpectedly at his home in Chanhassen on Wednesday, March 15, 2017. He was surrounded by his wife, Lois, and several members of his family. Bob was born on August 11, 1935 in Mankato, Minnesota. He served in the United States Army for two years before marrying Lois Ann Mennenga on May 6, 1961 in Lake Crystal, Minnesota. Together, they raised two sons. Working as a food broker, Bob spent his entire career working in the grocery industry---living in Sioux City for 18 years and then in Des Moines for 27 years. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of Midland Credit Union in Urbandale, Iowa. Since moving to Minnesota, Bob has been a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Excelsior.
Although they moved to Chanhassen in 2012, Bob and Lois have maintained strong friendships with people in all places where they lived. In Sioux City, he played in a poker group that has continued to meet for thirty years. Bob also enjoyed boating; creating fond memories of camping and teaching his sons to water ski. As members of Hillcrest Country Club in Des Moines, he and Lois made many friends playing golf. Bob was also an active member of a Monday touring golf league after he retired. In all these golf adventures, he created wonderful friendships with his golf partners. Besides golf, Bob was a true fan of University of Iowa athletics and in the last few years was even known to cheer for Iowa State and Minnesota if they were not playing the Hawkeyes.
More than these activities, Bob most enjoyed anything that involved his grandchildren. Besides being a great father, he was a fabulous grandfather. Nothing gave him more pleasure than hanging out with his four grandchildren. Over the years, he could be found at football games, speech tournaments, basketball games, plays, piano recitals, baseball games, swim meets, choir concerts, dance recitals and cross country races. Bob took special pride in playing in family golf tournaments with his grandchildren and in escorting his granddaughters to father-daughter dances. He became a fast favorite among neighborhood children and his grandchildren’s classmates; all of whom would affectionately call him ‘Grandpa Bob’.
Bob is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lois Ann; his two sons, Randall (wife-Gail) of Excelsior and Ronald (wife-Daylene) of Sioux City, Iowa; his four grandchildren: Mary Patricia, Josephine, Ryan and Bentley; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Murphy of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; three nephews: Richard, William and Michael; and a Godson, Douglas Mennenga of Minneapolis.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church of Excelsior in memory of Robert Ross.
